Spooky Date Night Idea: Carnivorous Plant Terrariums

A poisonous seed will only kill you if you chew it and swallow.

It is full on spooky season and I could not be more excited if I tried. Believe me, I’m trying. Halloween has gradually become my favorite holiday over time. It ticks off all of my favorite boxes:

  • Cosplay
  • Sweater weather
  • Thriller books
  • Outdoor activities
  • Fun costumes
  • Community
  • Candy

Clearly, not a full list, but you get the picture. This year, the Halloween season is next level. We’ve got a family costume, a trip to Salem, Massachusetts, trick or treating plans, a Halloween party to go to, and lots of spooky outfits I got when they were on sale.

We also convinced our friends to go to an extra special event at the local plant shop, Gallery Grow. They’ve done cute Halloween-inspired events all month, but the second I saw this one I literally said “take my money, we’re doing this.” What’s the event you ask? A carnivorous plant terrarium making class.

The event started at 5:30 which meant I got to leave work early, thank you! The event is also BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine to share. It’s a really fun extra element that makes it feel more fun if that’s your thing. We were early so we got to explore the amazingness that is Gallery Grow. They have planters, terrarium elements, macrame, and (of course) plants everywhere. It’s pretty much a plant lovers paradise. Even though we left the dogs at home, they are dog friendly during their regular hours! That made me fall in love with this place even more.

Back to the event. We were grouped by fours at different tables packed with terrarium elements like moss, decorations, dirt, sand, rocks, and more. It started off by everyone picking their 3 carnivorous plants and a brief introduction of how to build the terrariums. They had two employees there who were super helpful, nice, and patient with everyone’s questions.

They showed us how to do everything and were there if we needed it, but they really let us be as creative as we wanted. Once we got the rocks, charcoal, and dirt in we planted our bug-eating plant babes and went to town decorating. There was moss in so many different colors, colored sand, small pebbles in tons of colors, fall decorations, tiny ceramic mushrooms, halloween skulls, fake spiders, fake cobwebs, and everything you could basically dream up for a Halloween-themed terrarium.

The event only lasted an hour and it flew by but in the best way. It’s been two days and we’re still talking about how much fun we had. I can’t wait to go back and try another themed class. Even my boyfriend who isn’t always into creative things like this had an amazing time and I loved being able to do that with him. This was hands down one of the best date nights we’ve had.

Hopefully, you live close to Lancaster so you can experience Gallery Grow first hand. If not, maybe there’s a similar shop near you! If there isn’t a class like this near you, don’t worry. This is something you can do at home as well for a fun friend night. You could buy everything new OR go thrifting to find a planter, decorations, and more!

If you make your own spooky terrarium PLEASE send me a message so I can see! One of my favorite parts of the class was seeing all of the different ways people used the same props. There wasn’t a single terrarium that looked the same and that’s just plain amazing.
