Book Review: Queer Eye: Love Yourself, Love Your Life

You don’t need to bring anything except your best self

Fab 5

I actually squealed when I realized the Fab 5 had written a book. Their show has legitimately changed my life. If you’re looking to redeem your faith in humanity park yourselves in front of your tv and prepare to binge this Netflix show with a box of tissues and a notebook so you can take notes for all of the things that inspire you. You will cry and be happy about it. You will want to conquer the world in the friendliest way possible.

I’m not here to talk about the show (even though I could…for days). It took me over a year to realize that I haven’t been adding book content to my blog even though I read almost 100 books a year and never leave the house without one. Books are an essential travel item whether you’re killing time in an airport or lounging on a beach hammock. So, my friends, my gift to you this Tuesday evening is my book review of the best feel-good book I’ve ever read.

YAS QUEEN

The Fab 5 cowrote this book together to bring an amalgamation of their talents, grooming, fashion/style, decor, cooking, and culture. I had high expectations because the show is so well done, and this did not disappoint.

Each chapter reflects the personality of Johnathan, Bobby, Tan, Karamo, and Antony perfectly. It’s clear they are unabashedly themselves, experts in their fields, and freaking MASTERS of making me feel all the feels.

As I read this book, I was inspired by something on every single page. This is coming from the woman who is currently wearing gym pants, a baggy sweater, no makeup, wild hair, in my kitchen surrounded by awkward decor. But you know what I learned? That’s okay.

Be You and Do It Well

Currently, my dream is to have those 5 fabulous men burst into my home with their joy and utter awesomeness to completely redo myself and my home. The true bliss that comes from their book makes the reader realize they are not “redoing” their clients but enhancing what is already there.

They boost confidence. They make people see their true worth. They lift people up. They are vulnerable, so others can see it’s okay. They never demean a person for their personal style. They tell it like it is. They are the superheroes the world needs.

One thing I learned and should’ve realized on my own was that it’s okay to be who you are, regardless of your situation. Now, if you’re a sh*t head to everyone you meet and you just bring negativity into the world, let’s rethink that. BUT if you are struggling with your identity or self-worth. This book will give you a boost or, at the very least, a smile.

I Laughed, I Cried, I Wanted To Conquer

This is me trying to dance while getting a picture taken while I also look like I’m pooping out part of a leash… Not even a little bit ashamed or embarrassed.

It’s true. Can you believe? (Non-show watchers won’t get that one, sorry not sorry). This book made me laugh out loud and scare my boyfriend and my pets because it was so loud and unexpected. I carried this book to work, to the gym, and of course, to the bathroom.

I don’t think a book has every given me so many emotions all rolled into one. I got to Karamo’s chapter and went, “oh man, I’m going to grab some ice cream, tissues, and curl up with my dog to prepare.”

I’m a better person for reading this book. I also don’t think I’ve ever given a book such a glowing review, but I honestly feel this way. You can probably tell by my babbling.

Perfect For The Times

In a time where the country and the world is focused more on hate and division, this book showed me that that sentiment isn’t the norm. There are incredible people out there of all shapes, sizes, colors, and beliefs. They are all valid. I’m so glad that these fantastically incredible men put themselves out there with the sole purpose of helping others.

They have changed the lives of dozens of people in person (most likely WAY more), and they have now changed the lives of millions via Netflix, myself included. I took a good hard look at my life and what I was doing and made changes because of them. I even started a group that helps my community, because why not?

This is pride month. What better time to show your support for the LGBTQ community? With this book, you aren’t showing support only for them, but for humanity. *cue dramatic music*

Your Next Vacation Read

Life is too short for the negativity to win. Bring a bit of positivity with you the next time you travel. You never know what you might learn.

The only downside to bringing this book on your next trip is that it is rather large and slightly heavier if you’re worried about carryon or checked bag weight. It’s worth it though.

Have you checked this book out yet? Read it? What did you think??

  1. OK, but how do you TRULY feel about the book? Ha ha!! Just kidding. Your book review cup overfloweth with enthusiasm. 🙂 One question: Is watching the show necessary to get the most out of the book, or are they independent enough of one another? (I only ask because I don’t have time to binge watch it right now.)

    1. Haha I did get a bit carried away, but it really made me happy. You don’t need to see the show to understand the book at all. It’s actually a great introduction to who they are and what they are experts in.
